Cancer risk from exposure to galactic cosmic rays - implications for human space exploration
نویسندگان
چکیده
Current space programs are shifting toward planetary exploration, and in particular towards human missions to the moon and Mars. However, space radiation is a major barrier to human exploration of the solar system because the biological effects of highenergy and charge (HZE) ions, which are the main contributors to radiation risks in deep space, are poorly understood. Predictions of the nature and magnitude of the risks posed by space radiation are subject to very large uncertainties. Great efforts have been dedicated worldwide in recent years toward a better understanding of the oncogenic potential of galactic cosmic rays. A review of the new results in this field will be presented here. 1 https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=20080029284 2017-11-06T23:31:38+00:00Z

Cancer risk from exposure to galactic cosmic rays: implications for space exploration by human beings.
Space programmes are shifting toward planetary exploration, and in particular towards missions by human beings to the moon and Mars. However, exposure to space radiation is an important barrier to exploration of the solar system by human beings because of the biological effects of high-energy heavy ions. These ions have a high charge and energy, are the main contributors to radiation risk in de...
متن کاملPoor Understanding of Radiation Profiles in Deep Space Causes Inaccurate Findings and Misleading Conclusions
The radiation environment in deep space, where astronauts are behind the shelter provided by the Earth’s magnetosphere, is a major health concern. Galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPE) are two basic sources of space radiation in the solar system. The health risks of exposure to high levels of space radiation can be observed either as acute and delayed effects. Zhang et al. ...
متن کاملPhysical Investigation of Space, Dosimetry of Space Ionizing Ray Effect (Van Allen belts, Galactic Cosmic Rays and Solar particles) and Plotting Dose Map for Satellite Circular Missions
One of the main factors for satellite design is simulating of total ionizing dose due to space ionizing rays in devices used in space. By measurement of induced dose based on available data in different altitudes, expenses of designing, satellite weight and amount of needed fuel will be reduced. Optimum design of satellite for protecting satellite against ionizing radiation has considerable eff...
متن کاملSpace Radiation Cancer Risk Projections for Exploration Missions: Uncertainty Reduction and Mitigation
Late effects from the high charge and energy (HZE) ions present in the galactic cosmic rays (GCR) including cancer and the poorly understood risks to the central nervous system constitute the major risks for exploration missions. Methods used to project risk in low Earth orbit (LEO) are viewed as highly uncertain for projecting risks on exploration missions because of the limited radiobiology d...
متن کاملRisk from relativistic heavy ions on manned space missions.
The risk from exposure to radiation posed to space travelers outside the magnetic shielding provided by the geomagnetosphere will come from two sources: the slowly varying but low intensity high-energy galactic cosmic rays and the more intense predominantly low-energy protons from large solar particle events associated with magnetic disturbances originating sporadically on or within the solar s...
